Delphi and C++Builder 2010 InstantOn FAQ

By: Tim DelChiaro

Abstract: Information for ToolCloud and All-Access users about Delphi and C++Builder InstantOn

Embarcadero is very excited about releasing InstantOn capability into its Delphi and C++Builder products. Never heard of InstantOn (ION)? This is a technology used in our Embarcadero All-Access™ product line that allows our products to be completely self-contained in a single executable. This means no installs, no programs installed on the system, and no changes to system files on the desktop.

InstantOn is an additional feature available for owners of All-Access, and of the Embarcadero ToolCloud. It can be obtained by upgrading your RAD Studio, Delphi, or C++Builder to one of our ToolCloud licensing options (which also provide you with unrestricted access to the 2009 and 2007 versions), or to All-Access.

Removing “installation” as a prerequisite for use greatly speeds the time between obtaining and using the software, and it allows Delphi and C++Builder to be used in locked-down environments without affecting administrator-restricted areas of the desktop. Depending on what you are doing and how you work (what plug-ins you are using, etc.), you may still want to install the software. InstantOn is not meant to replace installation in all cases: the installer may still have its place. However it provides powerful alternative to installation, and in the future let you run multiple versions of RAD side by side without any chance for conflict: either between versions, or with other software that may reside on the same machine.

    Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

Q: Are there technical limitations or differences in features and functionality between a full install of Delphi or C++Builder and the InstantOn version?

A: Yes. See the “Differences…” section below.

Q: How do I get an InstantOn version of Delphi or C++Builder?

A: Purchase Embarcadero All-Access or purchase Embarcadero ToolCloud licenses for Delphi, C++Builder or Embarcadero RAD Studio

Q: ToolCloud and All-Access licenses include versions 2007, 2009 and 2010 of Delphi and C++Builder. Do I get InstantOn access to all three of those versions?

A: As of the ToolCloud launch in February 2010, only Delphi 2010 and C++Builder 2010 are available via InstantOn. All three versions (2007, 2009 and 2010) are available as full installs and the Delphi Prism portion of RAD Studio is also available as a full install.

Q: How do I get access to the InstantOn versions once I purchase a ToolCloud or All-Access license?
A: They will be available from your ToolCloud server. If you have an older version of the server, you may need to import an updated XML file to see the latest product list. You can also get the InstantOn downloads from the registered users page at https:// Note that you will only have access to the downloads if you are a registered All-Access or ToolCloud license holder.

Q: Do I really not have to install anything to run the InstantOn version?
A: That’s right. You just save the .exe file to your hard drive and double-click it to run.

Q: Can I give it to my friends or co-workers to try?

A: No. The product won’t start if you don’t have a valid All-Access or ToolCloud license.

Q: Is a trial version available?

A: Regular Delphi, C++Builder and RAD Studio trial downloads are readily available on our web site at so you can evaluate the functionality of those products. If you’d specifically like to try the ToolCloud licensing mechanism, you can arrange an evaluation by filling out the form at:

Q: Where can I get the latest information on which products and versions are available via InstantOn?

A: You can find that information on our documentation wiki at

Differences between regular installs and InstantOn

There are a few technical limitations at this time with the ION version of RAD Studio 2010. They are listed below.

    Windows 7 Support

While the InstantOn application does run on Windows 7, it is not officially supported at this time. The InstantOn application is supported on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008. The full install is supported on all of those platforms plus Windows 7.

    Third Party Installs

Third party installs into the virtual environment are not officially supported at this time. It is possible to install a third party application by selecting View->File Explorer and running the third party install. However, there may be some issues running third parties in this environment.

    English Documentation Included

Only the English documentation is included in the InstantOn executable. To view help in another language, the help installer can be downloaded from the registered user's site and installed on the host system. Alternatively, the documentation wiki is available at:

InstantOn updates are provided as separate executables

If Embarcadero releases an update to a release, a new InstantOn executable will need to be downloaded. This implies that any customization that was done to the original executable must be repeated on the updated InstantOn executable. For example, if a third party add-on was installed or library paths were modified, those same actions would need to be done on the updated InstantOn executable.

InstantOn does not provide BDE Administration via the control panel

To use BDE Administration on the InstantOn version, run View->File Browser and run BDEAdmin.exe, located at Program Files\Common Files\Borland Shared\BDE.

Grace periods are not provided with InstantOn versions of the product

To use the InstantOn version of the product, the user must complete the registration process. For installed products, users can delay registration for a short period of time.

The ION build does not automatically install the prerequisites software

If the prerequisites are not installed, the user is notified that he or she must download the pre-requisites from Microsoft.
