Customers and ISVs can sometimes find themselves in the unenviable position of having to migrate an application from one DBMS platform to another. The reasons for migrations vary: scaling issues; new requirements; increased security needs, rising costs or platform deprecation. Three DBMS vendors in the market place control 85% of the business. So it should be easy to pick the right database to use, right? Not so fast! While the big three deliver excellent DMBS servers that can handle a wide array of applications, they are not right for every application. Even when IT shops expose a single platform policy, they typically run multiple database platforms. And there are more choices in DBMS servers than ever before, including fit-for-purpose platforms for business intelligence, search, real-time applications, and embedding. With so many offerings, how do you go about making the right choice of which product to use?
