    3rdRail™ Installation Notes

These notes apply to the 3rdRail 1.1 Release.

    Updating From a Previous Version of 3rdRail

If you are updating from 3rdRail version 1.0 or 1.01, download and extract 3rdRail 1.1 from the CodeGear Registered Users Site http://cc.codegear.com/reg/3rdrail and follow the installation intructions below. Do not use the 3rdRail Update Manager for the initial installation of 3rdRail 1.1, as it will not provide all the new components included with this version. After the initial installation of 3rdRail 1.1 is complete, the Update Manager can be used to install any recent updates.

    System Requirements

3rdRail has been certified and is supported on the following platforms for this release:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 (aka Tiger) on Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.5 (aka Leopard) on Intel
  • Ubuntu 7.10 (aka Feisty) on Intel 32-bit
  • Windows XP on Intel 32-bit
  • Windows Vista on Intel 32-bit

In addition to the officially supported platforms the following operating systems are reported to work:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 (aka Tiger) on PowerPC
  • Mac OS X 10.5 (aka Leopard) on PowerPC
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server and Workstation 4 on Intel 32-bit
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server and Workstation 5 on Intel 32-bit
  • Windows Vista 32-bit version on Intel 64-bit

    Installing 3rdRail

If you have not already, download and extract 3rdRail from CodeGear http://www.codegear.com/products/3rdRail.

    Windows Installation

To install on Windows:

  1. Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the 3rdRail install directory
  2. Launch install_windows.exe

    Linux Installation

To install on Linux:

  1. Open a terminal and navigate to the 3rdRail install directory
  2. Launch install_linux.sh

Additional notes:

  • The installer does not create shortcuts on Linux.

    Mac Installation

To install on a Mac:

  1. Using Finder, navigate to the 3rdRail install directory
  2. Launch install_macosx.app

Known Issue:

  • Note: The default target directory is the current user's applications folder (~/Applications), rather than the system applications folder (/Applications).

    Product Update Instructions

    Update Option 1: Search for updates on current features

  1. Launch 3rdRail
  2. From the main menu, select Help | Software Updates | Find and Install...
  3. Select Search for updates of the installed features
  4. Select Finish.  Note: Sometimes this process will timeout while trying to locate download sites for certain features.  If this happens, just start over.
  5. Select the CodeGear 3rdRail Updates option and deselect all others
  6. Select Next
  7. Review and accept license agreement
  8. Select Next
  9. Make sure that the main 3rdRail checkbox is checked
  10. Select Finish
  11. Select Install All when prompted for verification to install updates
  12. Select Yes when prompted to restart

    Update Option 2: Search for new features to install

  1. Launch 3rdRail
  2. Form the main menu, select Help | Software Updates | Find and Install...
  3. Select Search for new features to install
  4. Select Next
  5. Select CodeGear 3rdRail Discovery site from the list.  Make sure that the other sites are deselected.
  6. Select Finish
  7. Select CodeGear 3rdRail Discovery from the list
  8. Select Next
  9. Make sure that the main 3rdRail checkbox is checked
  10. Select Finish
  11. Select Install All when prompted for verification to install updates.
  12. Select Yes when prompted to restart.

    Update Option 3: Manage configuration

  1. Launch 3rdRail
  2. Form the main menu, select Help | Software Updates | Manage Configuration
  3. Expand <3rdRailInstall>\thirdrail\eclipse
  4. In the tree on the left, select the node labeled 3rdRail ?.?.?.?
  5. In the pane on the right, select Scan for updates
  6. Review and accept the license agreement
  7. Select Yes when prompted to restart.
