    Embarcadero® J Optimizer™ 2009 Touchpoint Installation

Welcome to J Optimizer 2009 Touchpoint. Touchpoint is a set of integration plug-ins that enables developers to use the J Optimizer configuration tools from within their own Eclipse-based development environment or IDE.

The Touchpoint plugins provide the following launch configurations for configuring and launching java applications from your host IDE:

  • Java application
  • Java applet
  • JUnit
  • JUnit plugin test
  • Eclipse application
  • WTP server profiling from the Servers view for the following servers
    • Apache Tomcat 6.x
    • Apache Geronimo 2.1.3
    • JBoss 4.0.5
    • JBoss 4.2.2

    System Requirements

The Touchpoint plugins can be installed into the following host IDEs using either an installer and/or the update manager within the host IDE.

Note: On Linux, please ensure that the default JDK/JRE is set to JDK 1.5 before launching the touchpoint installer.

    Installation

This section provides information on using the Touchpoint installer. Please ensure that you shutdown the host IDE before launching the Touchpoint installer.

    Installing on top of Eclipse 3.4.1 Java/JEE editions and IBM Rational Application Developer 7.5 using the installer

  • Close all other running applications (including the host IDE) before installing J Optimizer 2009 Touchpoint.
  • Insert DVD; or download the ESD and extract it to [JOptimizer2009RootDirectory]. The installation launcher opens. If the installation launcher does not open (or you are not installing from the DVD), open the DVD or navigate to [JOptimizer2009RootDirectory], double-click install_windows.exe.
  • To begin installation, click J Optimizer 2009 Touchpoint.
  • The Introduction screen appears.
  • Read the information provided. Click Next.
  • Accept the license agreement when prompted. Click Next.
  • Select the eclipse executable (eclipse.exe). Click Next
  • Review the installation options that you have selected. If the options are correct, click Install to begin the installation.
  • Wait for the progress bar to indicate that the install is complete. Click Done.

    Installing on top of Eclipse 3.4.1 Java/JEE editions using the update manager

  • Insert DVD; or download the ESD and extract it to [JOptimizer2009RootDirectory]. 
  • Launch the host IDE
  • Select Help | Software Updates...
  • Click on Available Software.
  • Click the "Add Site" button.
  • Open the DVD or navigate to [JOptimizer2009RootDirectory]
  • Set the directory to the JOptiTP/JOptimizerTPArtifacts directory under the root directory. Click OK to create the local site
  • Expand the update site in the Software Updates window. Expand J Optimizer.
  • Select the Embarcadero J Optimizer Profiling feature if you are installing into Eclipse 3.4.1 Java edition. Select the Embarcadero J Optimizer JEE Profiling feature if you are installing into Eclipse 3.4.1 JEE edition.
  • Click the "Install" button.
  • Click Next and accept the license agreements.
  • Click Finish to start the install.
  • Restart the host IDE after installation.

    Installing on top of Eclipse 3.3.2 Java/JEE editions and MyEclipse 6.6

  • Insert DVD; or download the ESD and extract it to [JOptimizer2009RootDirectory]. 
  • Launch the host IDE
  • Select Help | Software Updates | Find and Install
  • The Install Update window opens. Click the button "Search for new features to install". Click Next.
  • Click the button "New Local Site"
  • Open the DVD or navigate to [JOptimizer2009RootDirectory]
  • Set the directory to the JOptiTP/JOptimizerTPUpdateSite directory under the root directory. Click OK to create the local site
  • Click Finish in the update manager window. The specified site is searched and, the search results are delivered in an Updates window.
  • Expand the update site in the Updates window. Expand J Optimizer.
  • Select the Embarcadero J Optimizer Profiling feature if you are installing into Eclipse 3.3.2 Java edition. Select the Embarcadero J Optimizer JEE Profiling feature if you are installing into Eclipse 3.3.2 JEE edition or MyEclipse 6.6.
  • Click the "Select Required" button to automatically include all required dependencies.
  • Click Next and accept the license agreements.
  • Click Next to review the list of features that will be installed.
  • Click Finish to start the install.
  • Restart the host IDE after installation.

    Installing on top of MyEclipse 7.0

  • Insert DVD; or download the ESD and extract it to [JOptimizer2009RootDirectory]. 
  • Launch the host IDE
  • Select Help | Software Updates | Add/Remove Software...
  • The MyEclipse 7.0 update manager opens. Select Locally Installed Sofware and click button "Add Software".
  • Click button Manage Sites. Click button Add.
  • Click button Local.
  • Open the DVD or navigate to [JOptimizer2009RootDirectory]
  • Set the directory to the JOptiTP/JOptimizerArtifacts directory under the root directory. Click OK to create the local site
  • Enter a name for the local site and click OK. Click Next.
  • Expand the update site. Expand J Optimizer Profiling and select the CodeGear J Optimizer JEE Profiling feature.
  • Click Next and accept the license agreements.
  • Click Next to review install location. Click Update to start the install. 
  • Restart the host IDE after installation.

    Touchpoint Launch Configurations

To configure and launch your Java application with J Optimizer profiling tools:
  • Switch to the Java perspective
Note: In MyEclipse 6.6 and MyEclipse 7.0 please ensure that you go through the following steps to enable required Capabilities before creating a launch configuration.
  1. Click Window|Preferences. Expand the General node and click on Capabilities.
  2. Click the "Advanced" button.
  3. Expand the MyEclipse Standard Tools node
  4. Select capabilities "WTP Deprecated" and "WTP Extras"
  5. Close all dialogs by clicking OK
  • Click Run|Profile Configurations... (or Run|Profile...)
  • Select Java application or any other supported launch configuration.
  • Click the New button in the toolbar to create a new launch configuration
  • Set all required parameters in the Main tab
  • Click on the Monitor tab
  • Expand "Java Profiling Agent Launcher - J Optimizer" and select the desired agent - Profiler, Thread Debugger, Code Coverage or Request Analyzer.
  • Set the J Optimizer Agent directory when prompted to do so. The default location of the J Optimizer agent directory is JOptimizer2009/joptimizer-agent. Note:  Please ensure that you have launched standalone J Optimizer product at least once. This will extract the agent and create the joptimizer-agent directory. You can also set the agent directory in Window|Preferences. J Optimizer Agent Directory.
  • Set any other profiling options for the configuration.
  • Click Profile to launch your application with the selected J Optimizer profiling tool.
To launch any of the supported application servers with J Optimizer Request Analyzer from the Servers view:
  • Open the Servers view. Click on Window|Show View...Other.. Type Servers in the filter text area and open the view Server|Servers.
  • Right click in the Servers view and select New and configure the application server
  • Right click on the server in the Servers view and select Profile
  • Expand "Java Profiling Agent Launcher - J Optimizer" and select Request Analyzer or any other J Optimizer profiling tool.
  • Set the J Optimizer Agent directory when prompted to do so. The default location of the J Optimizer agent directory is JOptimizer2009/joptimizer-agent. Note:  Please ensure that you have launched standalone J Optimizer product at least once. This will extract the agent and create the joptimizer-agent directory. You can also set the agent directory in Window|Preferences. J Optimizer Agent Directory.
  • Set any other profiling options for the configuration.
  • Click Finish to launch your application server with the selected J Optimizer profiling tool.
To view profiling data from your application or application server:
  • Launch standalone J Optimizer
  • Click Run|Profile Configurations...
  • Select Attach - J Optimizer Agent
  • Click the New button in the toolbar to create a new launch configuration
  • Select from the Profiling Type dropdown. Ensure that you select the profiling tool that you used to launch your application with. The port number will be set automatically based on your selection.
  • Set Hostname to the hostname/IP Address of the machine where you have launched the application from.
  • Click Profile to attach to the process and view data from your application (or application server)
