3rdRail Installation Notes

    System Requirements

3rdRail has been certified and is supported on the following platforms for this release:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 (Intel)
  • Win Vista (32-bit)
  • Win XP (32-bit)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation 4 (32-bit)

In addition to the officially supported platforms the following operating systems are reported to work:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server & Workstation 5 (32-bit)
  • Windows Vista (32-bit on 64-bit hardware)
  • Mac OS X 10.4 (PowerPC)
  • Ubuntu Feisty (32-bit)

    Installing 3rdRail

If you have not already, download and extract 3rdRail from CodeGear http://www.codegear.com/products/3rdRail.

    Windows Installation

To install on Windows:

  1. Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the 3rdRail install directory
  2. Launch install_windows.exe

    Linux Installation

To install on Linux:

  1. Open a terminal and navigate to the 3rdRail install directory
  2. Launch install_linux.sh

Additional notes:

  • The installer does not create shortcuts on Linux.

    Mac Installation

To install on a Mac:

  1. Using Finder, navigate to the 3rdRail install directory
  2. Launch install_macosx.app

Known Issue:

  • Description: There have been reports of the Mac install failing shortly after launch. In which case there may a problem with the path of the jar file. The error is "The main class "com.zerog.util.relaunchers.MacOSXRelauncher" could not be found."
  • Workaround: Copy the 3rdrail.macosx folder into /tmp and run 3rdRail.app from there.

Additional notes:

  • The default target directory is the current user's applications folder (~/Applications), rather than the system applications folder (/Applications).

    Product Update Instructions

Before updating 3rdRail for the first time, a small issue with the update configuration must be manually corrected by doing the following:

  1. If 3rdRail is running, close it
  2. Using your favorite text editor, open the <3rdRailHome>/.eclipseproduct file.  Note: Depending on your operating system, this file may be hidden.
  3. Replace the contents of the file with:
    name=Eclipse Platform
    
    id=org.eclipse.platform
    
    version=3.3.0
  4. Save and close the file.

After making the changes above, you can use the Eclipse Update manager to update 3rdRail via one of the following methods:

    Update Option 1: Search for updates on current features

  1. Launch 3rdRail
  2. From the main menu, select Help | Software Updates | Find and Install...
  3. Select Search for updates of the installed features
  4. Select Finish.  Note: Sometimes this process will timeout while trying to locate download sites for certain features.  If this happens, just start over.
  5. Select the CodeGear 3rdRail Updates option and deselect all others
  6. Select Next
  7. Review and accept license agreement
  8. Select Next
  9. Make sure that the main 3rdRail checkbox is checked
  10. Select Finish
  11. Select Install All when prompted for verification to install updates
  12. Select Yes when prompted to restart

    Update Option 2: Search for new features to install

  1. Launch 3rdRail
  2. Form the main menu, select Help | Software Updates | Find and Install...
  3. Select Search for new features to install
  4. Select Next
  5. Select CodeGear 3rdRail Discovery site from the list.  Make sure that the other sites are deselected.
  6. Select Finish
  7. Select CodeGear 3rdRail Discovery from the list
  8. Select Next
  9. Make sure that the main 3rdRail checkbox is checked
  10. Select Finish
  11. Select Install All when prompted for verification to install updates.
  12. Select Yes when prompted to restart.

    Update Option 3: Manage configuration

  1. Launch 3rdRail
  2. Form the main menu, select Help | Software Updates | Manage Configuration
  3. Expand <3rdRailInstall>\thirdrail\eclipse
  4. In the tree on the left, select the node labeled 3rdRail ?.?.?.?
  5. In the pane on the right, select Scan for updates
  6. Review and accept the license agreement
  7. Select Yes when prompted to restart.
