The News

On November 14, 2000, a press release announced that we will officially change our name to Borland Software Corporation. The legal name of the company will continue to be Inprise Corporation until the name change process has been completed during the first quarter of 2001. The company is de facto referring to itself now as Borland. Once the name change is completed, the company also expects to change its Nasdaq market symbol from "INPR" to "BORL".

In the opening keynote at our Australia/New Zealand Developer Conference 2000 last week in Sydney Australia, Dale Fuller pre-announced the name change.

At the conference's closing session, Dale held aloft a surfboard with the Borland logo. He gave away the surfboard to a lucky conference attendee, Martin Kammann from Information Dynamics Pty Ltd, Milton, Queensland, Australia.

Quoting from the press release:

"The Borland name has always been synonymous with superior technology," said Dale L. Fuller, president and CEO of Borland. "We recognize the influence the Borland name has on customers, and we know this decision will strengthen our identification within our target markets. The Borland name symbolizes a new start for the company, which has proven itself over the past eighteen months with two consecutive quarters of profitability. As we continue our turnaround, the name change signifies our renewed commitment to customers, stockholders, employees and analysts. Borland has always been well known for its ability to simplify complex technologies and the new name signals a return to the commitment to deliver superior technology that helps speed and ease the software development lifecycle."

A Personal Note

For me, the company has always been Borland. The Borland brand name has stayed strong since the beginning of the company. Sure, the legal entity was changed to Inprise Corporation a couple of years ago. I personally took some email heat when the name was changed back in 1998. But, our loyal developer community has always known and loved the Borland name. I hope most of you kept your Borland memorabilia, t-shirts, and posters.

Some community members have read my column detailing the history of the Borland name, and also the 1998 move to the new Inprise Corporation name. Many of you also seen a gradual diminishing of the Inprise name in our company logo.

We will all witness another change, a great change. We are a better company today, with award winning products, financial stability, new endeavours, great customers, and world class employees.

As always, I welcome your comments and suggestions.

Go Borland!
