Abstract: Simon Thornhill, Vice President and General Manager of the Borland RAD Tools Group, writes an open letter to members of the Delphi and C++Builder community.
Thank you for your support and for helping us to build the strong community around Delphi and C++Builder. This open letter is to update you on the progress we have made and our future plans.
As application developers you have seen many platform wars. Vendors have fought for you to adopt their operating system, their database, and their distributed computing platform. These rapidly moving platform standards continue to swirl around you every day at an ever increasingly dizzying rate.
Borland has no platform agenda. Our goal in this world of competing standards is to protect you from vendor and platform lock-in. As a developer using Borland tools, you are in the best position to take advantage of whatever platform standard solves your customer or end-user problem. The Internet is the future, and the Internet has no platform agenda.
Our promise to you is simple. You, the Delphi and C++Builder developer, will give your customers and end-users, applications that take advantage of all of the most important platform standards. With Delphi and C++Builder you will focus on solving your application problems and we will focus on breaking down the platform and technology walls. Delphi and C++Builder developers will be the fastest developers and their applications will have the highest performance.
As developers you are solving the difficult problems. To solve these problems you need tools that will dramatically reduce the time-to-benefit for you, your customers and your end-users. Over the past year we have redoubled our commitment and our efforts to supply you with the highest quality development tools that will make you, the developer, faster and give your applications the highest performance.
Last year we released Delphi 5. In this release we built on Delphi's strengths to give you the highest productivity Internet development. We enhanced and extended Delphi in the areas that are important to you, including enterprise distributed computing, database and desktop development.
Earlier this year we released C++Builder 5. C++Builder 5 is the most revolutionary C and C++ tool for the Internet and by far, our strongest ever C/C++ development tool. With C++Builder's high performance compiler, revolutionary visual design environment and support for the latest web standards, you will deliver your Internet applications in record time.
We extended our C++ language support to give you a compiler with the highest compliance to the ANSI standard. To grow the C++Builder community we made this world-class high-performance compiler available for free download. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Over 500,000 developers downloaded the compiler!
From your comments, e-mails, and newsgroup postings, you made it very clear that you needed tools like Delphi and C++Builder on other platforms, first and foremost on Linux. As result, we established the Kylix Project to deliver the cross-platform, developer productivity and application performance advantages of Delphi and C++Builder for the Linux operating system.
Project Kylix will be the first rapid application development (RAD) tool for building native compiled Linux applications. Kylix is Delphi and C++Builder for Linux. This year we will give you Delphi and follow that with a release next year of C++Builder.
In March of this year we launched the Kylix Kick-Start campaign to show early previews to the Delphi
and C++Builder third-party tools and component builders, book authors, and trainers. The Kick-Start campaign has since toured the world and given us some great feedback to help us in development. The demand among the 3rd party Delphi and C++Builder community is intense. The benefit to you is that soon after Kylix is released there will be a strong infrastructure of tools, components, books and training courses available.
The future for Delphi and C++Builder is bright. Our commitment is to you, the developer, and we would be excited to hear what you are thinking. Please send us your comments.
We are always looking for additional ways for you to help us better understand your needs. We have recently posted a Delphi survey and a new tool called the VCL Scanner. We encourage you to take a few minutes to respond, as the information gathered is invaluable in helping us to set the course for future development.

We know that many of you are using Delphi and C++Builder to build some of the most sophisticated Internet, database and desktop applications. We would love to hear about your successes. Please let us know about them so that we can share these success stories with the rest of the community.
Our company is in fantastic shape. Both financially and technologically, we are prepared for the next period of growth.
With Delphi, C++Builder and later this year Kylix, the Borland RAD group is in fantastic shape. We are committed to giving you the tools you need to be a high-performance developer and we are committed to marketing these tools and growing our business.
