Abstract: Three tips for running JSP's and Servlets in JBuilder 3.5

Question:

I am having trouble running and debugging JSP's and Servlets within JBuilder 3.5. What can I do?

Answer:

  1. First, make certain that your project's path does not have white space in it.

    Bad Example: C:/Documents and Settings/myName/jbproject/untitled8
(It is always a good idea in Java not to have white space in your paths)
    Good Example: C:/myName/jbproject/untitled8

  2. Second, your "Project Properties" Run tab needs to be set properly to the *.shtml or *.jsp file.  Look in JBuilder's help files under "Running the JSP" or "Servlets" for a detailed walk through on how to do this.

  3. When you launch your JSP or Servlet within the IDE, it is good practice to right click and remove the Session tab once you have stopped the process.  This tab is located below the Message Pane in "Run" mode and below the View Pane in "Debug" mode.  There is a known problem on some systems with the current Session keeping the threads open that are holding your ports.  Removing the Session tab will ensure that all processes and thread are killed.

If you are new to Servlets and JSP's, we have tutorials under "JSP" and "Servlet" in our help files, and samples programs in the jduilder35/samples directory.
