On my trusty version of Turbo Pascal ca 1984/5 Frank was a friend in deed, because I was in need - little did I know that the real guy was some fellow named Phillipe Kahn (Don't let the Bushies know please); Well regardless, he (Frank or otherwise) was a great help. But his real triumph came in 1991 when "he" teamed with me get my best friend past a Pascal class at Oxnard College (with an A, even). (This was last "math" class that my friend needed to move on towards getting his elementary school credential.) I shudder when I think of the horrors that came with the great mainframe and "thin clients" most folks had to deal with in the Class. Oxnard was a poor community and I think about 80 percent of the students had to deal with Dr. Wirth's original "big-iron" incarnation.

About the TurboPascal book written by Borland, well, it's ve3ry good and easy to read. I spend two hours on it and understand how to write a Pascal program including file handling. It's my first progrmmming/computer book. :-)Amigo

Here's some more history:Once upon a time, there were 3 Danish guys, one of them named "Ole", who in the early 80's saw that computers were going to be a big hit. They bought a "drawer" company that resided in Eireland - the company name was Borland. They teamed up with a frenchman; Phillipe Kahn, that new marketing, and that new, that the only way to sell products to the Americans, was to be an American company. And (as a marketing gimmick) they came up with the "hill-billy" wonder "Frank Borland".They also made a deal with Anders Hejlsberg (another dane), where they bought his PolyPascal compiler (that was almost the same as the ComPas compiler he had made even earlier for CP/M).Even SideKick was, I believe, made by a danish company. So it became a big success, and Phillippe Kahn came to control the company, and most of the original owners were bought out. I believe one of them tried with a "Jensen" product line of TopSpeed compilers, from his refuge in England.I have used Pascal ever since university around 1984, and have followed the evolution all the way until now. It is truly a great product, that Borland have evolved during the last 15+ yrs.I remember in the late 80's, that I opened what seemed to be a serious book about Turbo Pascal. In the foreword, the story about Frank Borland was written. So the marketing gimmick must have worked! - Knowing the above story, I didn't waste time reading the rest of the book...Regards, René Michaelhttp://ainvest.tripod.com
